There are many who think that the ability to offer precisely targeted offers and advertising will be one of the important drivers of mobile payments. If so, the work undertaken by a consortium of mobile technology companies could prove to be very important, indeed.
The tech companies are pooling resources to make a giant leap in the ability to get high-precision location information from mobile phones, using a combination of bluetooth and wifi signals. If successful, the system would permit marketers to find customers and potential customers at locations such as a shopping mall or convention center and deliver targeted messages to those nearby. GPS satellite signals generally can’t reach those locations.
